Dustin,
I think there is some interest in having some of these discussions go 
on, but you're right about them bringing the whole list down and driving 
people out. How about creating a 'brlug-political' list where people can 
move replies to when they have something political to say. I personally 
don't like seeing the flame wars go on, but providing a lesser-moderated 
list for it would discourage a lot of the arguments that happen here, I 
think. It should also be the place where discussions about advocation 
and news articles should go. I'd like the general list to remain purely 
technical..
