While you are trying a different distro, do yourself a favor and install FreeBSD 6.1 and try it for a while. I have been using this for while and I am very impressed. I do not use Gnome nor KDE so I have to experience on that regard. I am a WindowMaker user and run a few of the Gnome but never KDE applications if I have to.
Everyting works great on my Omnibook 6000 1G 512Ram. After running X I only use about 60M of ram. Oafter runninf OpenOffice and a some other apps I never go beyond 256. This is good because i think the distro can be used on older machines with not to much ram, yet, not using swap. There a few things that are diffrent than Linux but no that much. Compiling the Kernel is much easier. Compared to the 2.4 Linux Kernels, it is much better. The 2.6 are about the same in terms of Make. Give it a shot!. Genntoo users will love it.
