Open source games based on the GPL versions of Q2 and Q3 engines are nice,
but I never find their performance to be compelling for what they provide.

I found Nexuiz and Alien Attack to perform worse than Bioshock on my system,
for example.  Both games attempted to bolt recent features (e.g. Shader
Model 3.0 in the case of AA) onto the old engines, which are not usually
optimized.
