I bought a Nook a few weeks ago and liking it so far... yes you can't really read a book on a backlit screen. The e-Ink makes it feel like a real book. However I like to read at night though, so I wish the Nook or Kindle had some little LEDs on the side of the screen to gently illuminate the screen so you can read in the dark. Right now I just use an old school booklight haha.

Yeah but it does one thing REALLY well... (the kindle, have heard
mixed stuff about the Sony reader). What I really want is to not have
to carry 3 books around at a time. But now that ipad's out, it's kind
of a compelling device. I don't know though... If it flops, publisher
support for it will go to complete shit and then I still won't have a
reader.

I hear you on the eInk though. I hate reading stuff on backlit
screens...

I would love to get an ipad type device but I am going to wait until
eink + LCD hybrid technology, like Pixel Qi's displays(http://goo.gl/iufT
), mature enough and the device is open than an ipad. Android is a
great platform for a tablet/pad/ebook/Everything but the kitchen
sink device. I tried the kindle but felt the text and interface
were a little bland. The sony reader touch edition was a lot better
than kindle but I did not want to spend $200+ for a device that does
only one thing.

Yes, they're easy on the eyes. I read for literally a couple of
hours at a time while I'm traveling and it's just not good to read
a backlit display that long. The Nook and Kindle are easy on the
eyes and their battery life goes forever!

I thought the same thing until I actually saw a Kindle a while

Man you just hit on my biggest hangup about the iPad... I travel a
lot and read a lot and I want an eBook reader, but a backlit
display drives me nuts and makes my eyes hurt.

I personally can't stand "digital" magazines that are basically a
PDF version of a real magazine that never gets printed. If it's not
on paper, and it's more than a couple pages, I won't read it. The
exception is e-Books with a decent eInk reader. I'm sure the day is
coming that I'll have some sort of "tablet" or "pad" that easily
retrieves the publications I want so I can read them when, where,
and how I want them, but it's not here yet.
