Last I checked, Atheros chipsets were tricky - but this was some time ago.
When I used Ubuntu last, it had no problems recognizing everything and
connecting to the AP.

Is the AP you're connecting to using WPA? There may be some additional
steps/configuration you need to take in order to get WPA working properly.
