I dunno... you could load the knoppix cd again and use modprobe or something to 
tell you which kernel module (and version) was loaded that was playing nice 
with 
your wireless NIC.  you should be able to use that one on other distros... if 
they don't have it available in apt-get or whatever package manager, you can 
build it from source.  I would connect unecrypted in all of my tests and then 
enable WPA or whatever to figure out where the issue is.

also, you could try something like Linux Mint... which is basically just a 
modified Ubuntu with better restricted driver support... a lot of people have 
success with that one.

Last I checked, Atheros chipsets were tricky - but this was some time ago. When 
I used Ubuntu last, it had no problems recognizing everything and connecting to 
the AP.

Is the AP you're connecting to using WPA? There may be some additional 
steps/configuration you need to take in order to get WPA working properly.
