A few years ago when I looked @ CenturyLink DSL for a project, they were delivering it basically over a T1 circuit of some type and were putting <<some piece of equipment>> that handeled the T1 to DSL something and then would turn around and give you a DSL modem which essentially talked to another box. That was probably 4 years ago and in an area of town wehre AT&T had no infrastructure to provide (and still does not) have DSL service.
