I changed the "The Apache" font to one very similar to the "Jakarta Project" one and deleted by hand the vertical anti-aliasing that was present, to mimic the same thing in the current logo.

Does anybody know what the font in the original logo is? It is a common
font that I am familiar with, but I can't remember the name...

I was going to comment that this looked like a sign that the logo should be maintained as svg, so there'd be a record of what the font was; but since this is a do-ocracy, I just edited up the logo as svg (attached).
Cool! :-D

The font I used was tahoma - not as nice as the original logo font (which the graphic designer who sits behind me couldnt identify either) - identifont thinks its ITC Officina Sans ( http://www.identifont.com/identify?29+%20+1Y+7K+6MB+2ZN+9J+1JY+2BR+F+8QW+76P+1U7+8N+10+2E+7S+5P+9S+4C+1KS+8E+30C+6X4+6X8+9Z+79+1KI+42+7G+M ) - pretty good match! but I don't have a copy.

The SVG is just a hack on top of the sample that comes with Batik, I changed the size, flipped the feather and added some text.
Ok, some feedback, summing up previous feedback from others:
 - use tahoma bold also for "The Apache"
 - remove the shadow on the feather
 - change the font of the url to match the one on the www.apache.org logo

Anyway, svg is way cool! :-)
