This may have resulted after migration from Mac PowerPC to other earlier Mac, where the contents of the user folder was copied: both the application preferences and (or not) the local user libraries.
I would see if other desktop (non-applet) Java apps would run without that error. And try to find which configuration causes the error and resolve it.
