I did in fact make use of the Apple migration assistant to move user
accounts from my old PowerPC to the new iMac. I had been replacing
PowerPC binaries (running OK under Rosetta) to Intel (or universal)
as these became available and everything seemed fine. This just
happened to be the first Java app I needed to get running.

I would see if other desktop (non-applet) Java apps would
run without that error. And try to find which configuration
causes the error and resolve it.
So this looks like a local mis-configuration error.
