Thanks Oleg!

I did in fact make use of the Apple migration assistant to move user accounts from my old PowerPC to the new iMac. I had been replacing PowerPC binaries (running OK under Rosetta) to Intel (or universal) as these became available and everything seemed fine. This just happened to be the first Java app I needed to get running.

Excellent long-range debugging!

This may have resulted after migration from Mac PowerPC to
other earlier Mac, where the contents of the user folder
was copied: both the application preferences and (or not)
the local user libraries.

I would see if other desktop (non-applet) Java apps would
run without that error. And try to find which configuration
causes the error and resolve it.

So this looks like a local mis-configuration error.
