I've had exactly the same problem on a MacBook Pro (Intel 2.4 GHz core 2
duo) running J602. So it's not specific to underpowered machines.  However,
it only occurs if I try to fire up J soon after booting when there's quite a
lot of other start-up activity.

Java details:
java version "1.5.0_13"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_13-b05-241)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_13-121, mixed mode, sharing)
