I also got the error after installing J on my wife's new MacBook on my first try with the icon. The second try launched J OK. Nothing else was running.

Sent from my iPhone replacement for my stolen PP (which, alas can't run J.)

I've had exactly the same problem on a MacBook Pro (Intel 2.4 GHz core 2 duo) running J602. So it's not specific to underpowered machines. However, it only occurs if I try to fire up J soon after booting when there's quite a
lot of other start-up activity.

Java details:
java version "1.5.0_13"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_13- b05-241)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_13-121, mixed mode, sharing)

When I (attempt to) launch jwd it often results in a message window, 'Failed to get Java metrics.' When this occurs the J application fails to launch. Sometimes the problem persists, sometimes a subsequent attempt has succeeded.
Rebooting has tended to fix the situation.

I have not had any problems using J through the command-line terminal.

The machine on which this occurs has J 6.02.023 on Ubuntu version 7.10. This is a grossly underpowered system, and page-swapping delays may contribute to
this problem.
