I had the environment variable AWT_TOOLKIT set to MToolKit.
This has been recommended as the solution to several Java-problems like
applications drawing blank screens on startup or applications not working
with compiz.
When I unset that variable before starting jwd the error message does not
appear any longer. This is also the case with the old version of j.jar.
