openjdk (the open source java from sun) should be installed as default
for ubuntu 8.10. I tested it general run ok but the listbox inside the
  font choser dialog is invisble. Does anyone have similar experience
  with openjdk?

OT: Hi Ric, what email client you use? It appeared that a paragraph
inside your message is a very long line without proper LF.
