It should be "java -version". Anyway I also use ubuntu's default java
runtime. It should be icetea or openjdk. J front-end works fine
other than some minor problems like incorrect font size.
You may have a look at that log file

or send the file to Eric.
You reported jconsole failed that is another problem. Did you cd to
that j602/bin directory and run as "./jconsole" ?
