My J development is also REPL heavy, but if it involves definitions,
REPL uses tmp files (usually numbered files in the temp directory) or
sometimes "real files".

But the risk is that I might have used a definition in an earlier
version of a file but it no longer exists.  I typically do not find
out about this kind of problem until days later (because when it
arises I am not thinking about this issue).
