1. Is it possible that the the shortcut in the program group that
points to a batch file is from a previous installation? I just tested
on my machine and it definitely doesn't point to a batch file. You
could try naming the Program Group something distinct during install
to ensure that it is coming from the installer.

2. I think there is a school of thought that an installer shouldn't
uninstall stuff that it didn't install to start with. I know R takes
the same approach with it's packages. Having said that I am also
sympathetic to cleaning up the J install folder completely. I'll check
to see how easy that would be.
