I'm guessing a bit but I think the figures deal with accidental deaths 
among non-criminal gun owners.  So that would include a) shooting 
someone you though was breaking in (and it might have been a family 
member), b) kids getting ahold of a gun and shooting themselves or 
someone else, c) shooting yourself while cleaning a gun, d) etc...

In otherwords, it would exclude  gang war shootings, drug shootings, 
drive by shootings  and anything dealing with a criminal act.
