How about a good old fashioned "American Idea"? After toll roads were proved to be not financially profitable, the Govt. took over pretty much of what we now consider "infrastructure". As I remember from when I was a boy, that seemed to work pretty well. The 'phone bill was pretty inexpensive 'cause the people that used it the most (business) paid the most. AT&T was regulated, if tou pulled the cord out of the wall at 11 P.M. Saturday night there was an AT&T man there pronto. I know this to be true because I know a retired AT&T man who's job it was to send 'em out. The trains ran on time and were a real pleasure on which to ride (subsidized and regulated) and stopped in all of the small towns on the line where there was a need. All of the freeways were built and kept in pretty good shape. We paid less taxes until the people (not I) elected a bunch that stopped taxing the big money. Seems like I remember reading a newspaper article when I was in high school in the early '50's about millionaires paying 90% income tax. Could be wrong 50 years is a pretty long time. If the governments didn't run it they regulated it. There might not have been as much profit, but as a kid (maybe unaware of reality?) services seemed pretty darned good. I know somebody on the list can remember the Depression and how bad things were, but it was bad world wide. Depending on your historical point of view, some point at the treatment of Germany after WWI and the Big Bankers for that?

This upset anybody?
Bob
