And this is the actual point. Lots of the settings will get added or removed 
depending on the installed IDEA plugins. However, you can always selective- 
ly synchronise with Maven.

You'll get changes in the project files with every single commit, if you 
keep them in SVN, and you'll always have to ignore them, because accepting 
updates will destroy your own settings. That's why I tend to delegate 
things to POMs, excluding the IDE's project files.
