Yes, I have upgraded the firmware several times before. Upgrade procedure and OS worked well.

2. how did your phone change this status?

I was trying to downgrade the firmware from 2.2.1 to 2.2 on Linux Virtual Machine with 512MB of RAM.

It finished about 30% with the message:

"In some cases lthor needs enough memory. Please check free memory in

your host PC and unload some heavy applications"

Try to upload image from native OS not VM.

3. When did you get the reference board?

I have received the device in May 2013 (based on i9300)

4. Can you enter the download mode?

Yes, the download mode is activated automatically, just after "A mistake was made while downloading, a binary should be downloaded again." message.
