Timeline itself is rendered in a DIV element. To adjust its width
(height is auto adjusted based on the data in the bubble), just use
something line this in your html page: <div id="timeline" style="height:
300px; border: 1px solid #aaa"></div>

To set styles in the bubble, first create your own theme. Here is an
example of how to do it:
http://simile.mit.edu/wiki/How_to_Change_the_Themes

Once you create and apply the themes to your bands as explained in the
above example, use css to set styles on classes:
timeline-event-bubble-title, timeline-event-bubble-body,
timeline-event-bubble-image, timeline-event-bubble-time.

You can use any html code in the element <event> such as <br/>, <table>
etc. Its honored by the timeline.
Here is an example:
<event><dl><dt>Age (of administration): </dt><dd>5Y 6M</dd></dl></event>

Hope this helps.

I've been having trouble locating that particular example myself. I'm
having great success with exhibit (with map and timeline), but the
details window formatting has eluded me so far. Perhaps I can't see the
forest for the trees, but could you provide a link please?

Yes,

You can configure the bubble (I generally call it details window). Its
size and colors can be done in a theme. There is an example on how to
write theme's in one of the wiki's in their website. Take a look at
that.
