As a debugging hint, try using Firebug to inspect the element on the 
page when you can't formulate a straightforward explanation about its 
appearance.  By using the 'Inspect' feature (upper left of the Firebug 
pane) on any link on a sorting box, I found there were a few rules 
affecting the text color.  The one that wins is 'a:link' in your page's 
header, which turns all links, including the ones in the sorting box, to 
color #FFF.

You can write a more specific rule to "outdo" the a:link rule, like 
div.exhibit-menu-popup a:link { color: #000; } (at least, I think that's 
more specific).

Firebug can be your very good friend :)
