have you tried using the ping command, ie ping the amiga from the pc and ping
the pc from the amiga?

Yes, You'll ned to run a server on either of the servers, FTP is easy to set
up and it's a fast protocoll, Other than that you have samba.. 
(Unix (originally) implentation of the SMB protocol (network icon thngy on
win*))
