I managed to cure this problem by changing the init string to AT&F0.
I have used the other string for a long time on Miami with no
problems but looks as if Genesis does not like it somehow.
On the DLink modem 
                   &K3 is Enable RTS/CTS flow control
                   &C1 is Normal CD operations
                   &D0 is Ignore an on-to-off transition of DTR
