Hi Anne & Brooke, Some additional details about the new human assembly.
Information on the Genome Reference Consortium, which is responsible for updates to the human genome assembly can be found at http:// www.genomereference.org. The GRC includes the Sanger Institute, Washington University, EBI and NCBI. The web site includes details of the regions of the assembly currently under review. The plan is to formally release the next assembly near the time of the next Biology of Genomes meeting at Cold Spring Harbor in May 2009. Assuming everything stays on schedule, the UCSC and Ensembl groups will get the new assembly sometime before May so that, as Brooke mentions, updated genome browsers can be released as close as possible to the formal announcement.
