I realized last night that installing in a chroot is a lot easier than building prefix. I'm probably going to stick with that approach.

Not sure if this is related, but yesterday I committed a change that I
thought that was committed several days ago.  Not sure if your bootstrap
pulls the latest bootstrap script every time, if so, then it made use of
the latest bootstrap image, that is supposed to fix all horrors that
we've seen recently...
