I don't use an initrc/initramfs, and don't have much use for splash
screens obscuring kernel init information I like to see.  Further, my info
may be dated or related to some other kernel splash functionality.
However, the above disclaimer in mind... 

I read some time (a year?) ago that the kernel splash wasn't working on
64-bit amd64 kernels, and I've seen no posts verifying that it indeed
/does/ now work. (If it does, such a reply should be forthcoming. =8^)
