Same problem here, and I also noticed that XMMS sometimes crashes. Since this 
occurs randomly, and I didn't have time to search for the origin of the 
problem, I don't know what could be the cause. But both problems could be 
related, since mplayer seems to be synchronizing on the sound stream of the 
movies.

I wonder if that comes from the kernel, because in the same time I also 
noticed that opengl apps crash (I have an nvidia graphic adaptor). 

Unfortunatly, I have no time to invest further myself, but I'm really 
interested in the answer, if any.

My kernel is 2.6.15-gentoo-r1, and here are my use flags for mplayer:
