They are 2.6.0 only because Linus wants more testers. Right now 2.6.0 is in no way stable or even usable for a large number of users. Heck, it won't even build cleanly without patches on some archs. Also, migration right now is rather painful with certain setups (LVM for example). If the 2.4.x -> 2.6.0 move was seamless then your suggestion would be reasonable. Unfortunately, the migration is difficult (new userland tools, new compiler on some archs) and requires significant changes to a system. AFAIK, it'll probably also upset genkernel (which I don't touch, so I'm not sure on that). So really, a mass migration to 2.6.x at this point isn't plausible. It's unfortunate that the packages are named vanilla- and development-, but that's a seperate issue. 2.4 isn't even dead yet, there is definitely going to be a .24 and probably a .25 as well. | And those who are using vanilla-sources should know what they are | doing i think. Not really. A lot of server people will go for the vanilla- sources because they are widely tested and don't contain potentially explosive patches (most of the time). I hardly think most server admins will be rushing to switch to 2.6.x just yet...
