Hi all,

as already explained:
1) bots are not allowed (i think this was told over and over and the bot
is still in there, but that's another point)

the point i want to discuss is the following:

privacy

how does the bot / the irc stats thing handle the privacy of the people
in the chans it tracks?
is there any possibility to make it not list a special nick?
are you sure it is allowed to gather information about who is in which
chan, who said what etc.?
is this okay with local law in all countries from which ppl join those
chans?
do people in this chans know that information about their participation
in a specific chan can be viewed on a website? do they even know there
is a bot that keeps track of them?

i think you got the point...

think about it and let us know what you decided

Regards Tantive

Hello all,

I want to ask the people which are responsible for #gentoo and #gentoo.de
if I'm allowed to let the Basc-Bot idle in these channels.

This Bot *only* responds on two commands:

@basc [nick] <package> -- Sends the packagename to our
Buildtime-database and asks it for the time it would take to merge
it. If [nick] was not specified, the bot will reply to the nickname
of the caller. The mergetimes are related to our reference system:
Intel P4 2,6 GHz, 512 MB Ram. The mergetimes will be shown like this:
    [dd]:hh:mm:ss

@file [nick] <filename> -- Sends the filename to our filesearch-database
and asks it for the appropriate gentoo-packages. If [nick] was not
specified, the bot will reply to the nickname of the caller.

These are commands which are not available through any program on the
commandline.
If someone wants to know which package provides a specific file, this
could be done by etcat, or qpkg, but only if this package is installed
on this local machine. Our database holds every file of very, really
very much packages and this filedatabase is growing every day. So there
can be searched for such packages which provides one specific file if
this package is not installed on the local machine.

Remember: How much questions are coming every day, which asks: "how long
does this or that package take to merge...?" or "which package
holds /usr/lib/foo-bar.so...?"

If someone wants to test the bot, he can /join #gentoo-stats.
Note: in #gentoo-stats there are several other commands available to the
bot, which will not be available in the channels listed above.
(Try @list and then @help <pluginname>)
