The bot is only in these channels: #gentoo-anfaenger, #gentoo-music, #gentoo-wiki, #gentoo-stats This is already discussed with the owners and with the users in there. In #gentoo, #gentoo.de and #gentoo-ppc the bot is banned, so he is *not* in there. The owner of #gentoo-ppc (pvdabeel) has requested the bot, so I don't understand why it is banned there. > the point i want to discuss is the following: > > privacy > > how does the bot / the irc stats thing handle the privacy of the > people in the chans it tracks? Because these stats are really trivial and all channels are public, this should be no problem. > is there any possibility to make it not list a special nick? I don't think that is could be simply done. The statistics-generator is an opensource product, written in perl (afaik). -> http://pisg.sourceforge.net > are you sure it is allowed to gather information about who is in which > chan, who said what etc.? Sure, why not? All these channels are public. And everybody is allowed to quote something someone told in public. Every user in these channels knows, that there are irc-statistics on gentoo-stats.org which are generated by a bot which resides in these channels. If a user don't want this, he should not join the channel. > is this okay with local law in all countries from which ppl join those > chans? I think, this falls under the freedom of the press. But I'm not sure. I'm also not really sure if this is okay with *every* law of *all* countries. But I'm relatively sure that it is okay by the laws of whole Europe and USA. > do people in this chans know that information about their > participation in a specific chan can be viewed on a website? do they > even know there is a bot that keeps track of them? It was announced more than once in these channels. And every user should know this, yes. > i think you got the point... I think so. > think about it and let us know what you decided I've decided that the bot will *never* join these two channels (#gentoo and #gentoo.de). I've modified the bot, so that it should be possible to ask him in the query or in /msg by the following commands: /msg Basc-Bot basc <package> (for the mergetime of a package) /msg Basc-Bot file <filename> (for the package which provides this file) So this should be enough. You, as the ones who now knows how to use the bot, should give this commands to your users in the channels, if they ask one of the questions for which this bot was made. Well, surely only if you want this to do. > Regards > Tantive sinserely dma147 > Alexander Mieland wrote: > > Hello all, > > > > I want to ask the people which are responsible for #gentoo and > > #gentoo.de if I'm allowed to let the Basc-Bot idle in these > > channels. > > > > This Bot *only* responds on two commands: > > > > @basc [nick] <package> -- Sends the packagename to our > > Buildtime-database and asks it for the time it would take to > > merge it.
