Wrong standard to choose from. ;-) /var/db/ is already required by the
PMS for /var/db/pkg/.

Is this important for a Gentoo specific directory?

   /var/db/portage/ PORTDIR
   /var/db/layman/ layman storage
   /var/db/pkg/ VDB (no change)
   /usr/local/portage/ local overlays (no change)
   /var/cache/distfiles/ DISTDIR
   /var/cache/packages/ PKGDIR

Alternatively, the last two could be under
/var/cache/portage/{distfiles,packages}/.
