As a result, the time spent to maintain make.conf has been increased over time leading to more headaches on world updates etc. make.conf is there for a good reason, and that is to help you make your system highly configurable, but this should not get too complicated otherwise people will just lose interest and use a "good-default" one instead of spending half an hour tweaking it.
imho, in this particular case, the old behavior is fine by me and it's what has been around for a long time.
