Regardless of the base directory location, I might suggest a path dedicated to repositories, of which the main gentoo repo is just an initial one, and overlays could be placed as additional directories inside. /var/lib/portage/repositories/main /var/lib/gentoo/repositories/main /var/cache/gentoo/repos/main /var/cache/portage/repositories/gentoo (Something along those lines.) -- Rich
