Are the nameservers listed in /etc/resolv.conf recursive resolvers? Since name resolution works when using your own local nameserver it sounds like the remote ones may be misbehaving.

The nameservers listed here are broken; they return the list of root servers for /every/ query.

and so on.

Try using different nameservers.
