Thanks for all the responses. They really helped. Now I understand Gentoo much better and it looks really cool. It does seem to suit my tastes very well.
Now that I understand Gentoo better I also understand why most people couldn't quite answer my question about making my own ebuilds. It's just a non-issue. The purpose of making my own ebuilds was so I could install something that's not on the Portage tree and still get the package management. But since what I want *will* be on the Portage tree, the question is kind of pointless. Kind of like when a Windows user asks me "how long does it take to reboot Linux", and I reply "I don't know, why would I want to reboot Linux?". Regardless, I'm glad to know that ebuilds are easier to make than RPMs. Who knows, I might actually need to make one some day. I'm okay with waiting a long time for the compilation. I do a lot of that anyways. Now, there was a comment about Gentoo's LSB compliance. It made me curious. I'm not fanatic about LSB compliance, but I do favour it simply because then PHB's won't /perceive/ that Linux distros are incompatible and unsupportable. What exactly is the problem with Gentoo's LSB compliance? Once again, thanks for the responses. Gentoo does look amazing. -- Daniel Carrera Graduate Teaching Assistant. Math Dept.
