Ok here is the skinny on the situation. The drivers in the kernel are the same
as the ones included in the emu10k1 package with the exception of the ebuilds
drivers are newer. (essentially) To just get sound working ... use the one in
the kernel. If you want the latest greatest ...
compile sound support into kernel and the sblive as a module, then boot with new
kernel, then emerge the emu10k1 and hotplug, rc-update add hotplug default,
reboot and sound should work. once logged into system play with the emu tools.
full list of tools can be found by emu[TAB] look at the usage on each with
--usage. If your sound is unclean/distorted ... turn off the boost.

This works great for me and a lot of other people, including the other dev that
turned me on to trying it. This does not require ALSA in any way and you dont
need to edit any of the /etc/*modules* file(s).
