Yes, thanks Finne - that's basically what I did. What I found after the etc-update step was that it really didn't read my current make.conf settings at all. It just took the new file and replaced the old one with it. So, I opened up my old one, put all the old CPU architecture stuff back in by hand, and have gone forward. Thing seem OK so far.
