This is called anti-aliasing. This is not a bug, this is a feature.  I 
believe, if you do not like it, you may be the first person in the history of 
man to not like anti-aliased fonts. :)

It's now GTK2, of course there are changes (like the new secksi fonts).

I do not have this problem.

If your root cannot access the X desktop, the you are not su'ing to root 
properly.  Do not `su` or `su root`, only `su -`.  (Otherwise the enviorment 
variables for root will not take affect.)

If you must change clients, I like KMail but you'll still have the wonderful 
anti-aliased fonts (if you opt for them, IIRC).
