No, I'rm not using esd and I'm not using artsd. Neither alsa. Just OSS.
I think I'm gonna leave this alone for a while, until a new version of Realplayer comes out.

Do you have esd or artsd running? I believe these block access to the sound device. RealPlayer does have an option to change sound output to esd. I'm not sure about artsd, though.
