Apps sometimes stop working - unexpectedly! It is often not feasible to roll back the changes - this is the real culprit. In my case, vmware failed, and the workaround is a kludge to run it as root. At least one person posted that he had killed his system when trying to roll glibc back so vmware would work. Beware.
