Thanks for all your help. the issue was that snd-pcm-oss is not being loaded 
at startup, once I load snd-pcm-oss via insmod snd-pcm-oss the /dev/dsp 
device is created and everything works.

p.s. I don't know why snd-pcm-oss is not loading at start. I get the following 
error "unresolved symbol snd_mixer_oss_ioctl_card" but it will load from a 
kde terminal. if you have any Ideas please share. I may post this issue 
separately.
