Honestly I have no idea how you might have lost your home dir, but in my
case I mounted my home (separate hd) after I added users. It was a fresh
install.

I have seen the symptoms you are describing when kde cannot read/write
the user configuration files. Problem was typically resolved by deleting
.kde and login in again.
