If I couldn't boot, or otherwise figure it out if I could get a command line, 
I would try booting from a Knoppix cd, and try sorting it out from a full kde 
desktop, with access to all the Gentoo files. When you boot the Knoppix, boot 
as "knoppix single," then "startx," and remount your Gentoo partitions shown 
on the Knoppix desktop for  root read/write access (right click- select), so 
you can do any editing you need to.
