You mean I should do:
emerge -u system
again?
I have only done it once this far.

Yes, please try it :) You cannot harm your system with that, no matter how often
you do it (though 2 times throwing the same error would tell me to reconsider
:) ). Do you have yet compiled your own kernel ? If not, please do this first,
before issuing 'emerge -u system' again, and boot that kernel. Make sure
/usr/src/linux points to the _compiled_ sources of your current kernel, I get
the strangest errors if I don't do that... Another advice: Make sure to stick "~x86" into ACCEPT_KEYWORDS in
/etc/make.conf, this selects the current unstable development tree of gentoo for
your system (which runs quite well and gives you by far more recent
software-versions) - only select "x86" (the considered-stable tree) if that
system is a server where downtimes _must_ be avoided.

If that doesn't help please feel free to get back to me :)

Well.. I haven't compiled my own kernel yet. I am just trying to follow the official online installation guide.
I'll try to reemerge system now and will get back with the results later.

Thanks.

Hmmm, I'm not very good at this.
What should I do now?

/var/tmp/portage/ncurses-5.3-r2/work/ncurses-5.3-r2/config.log should tell you

It doesn't exist...
not even the directory. This exists though:

/var/tmp/portage/ncurses-5.3-r2/work/ncurses-5.3/

But there was no config.log file in it.
Another reply I received off list (Dennis Freise) suggested I should emerge -u system again.

What do you think?

thanks!

what the sanity check was and why it failed. If it doesn't make sense, please post the relevant part.
