Usually you do well by supplying a link to the document that you follow,
as doing so will allow us others to know just which of them you are
following. I assume its the desktop guide though.

Its a message that tells you that your sound will be silent until you
run, for example, "alsamixer" and go through PCM, Music and other
channels and hit "m" then raise the volume some.  To not fry your
soundcard, alsa starts off "muted" and lets you do volume adjusting
yourself.
