ANSWERS: 1) no, "ssh foo.bar smtp" won't work, because the point of "telnet foo.bar smtp" is to nicely fool the mailserver into thinking you're not telnet. (not that we want to prevent that anyway, so "fool" is a loose term)
2) Norbert, first of all, your question was answered in the FIRST REPLY. second of all, just use the nmap portscanner if you don't have telnet. "emerge nmap" (then as root) "xnmap" scan your desired machine, it's a good way to check to see what's alive. now stop flooding my mailbox or I'll force Godman's Law to be incited.
