this is different from mutt's standard 'folder' variable.

cur, new, tmp subdirs are missing.
Try 'maildirmake ~/.maildir' if you have courier-imap or maildrop installed.
Otherwise: mkdir ~/.maildir/{cur,new,tmp} (; chmod 700 ~/.maildir/{cur,new,tmp})
BTW: you should consider to change /etc/mail/aliases to redirect root's
mail to a common user. don't forget to run newaliases after that.
