The ebuild tells me that if you have the use flag 'maildir' activated, there must be 'home_mailbox = .maildir/' as well as other gentoo-ish settings at the very end of /etc/postfix/main.cf > Thanks: after creating the subdirs as you suggested now mutt recognizes > .maildir as a a mailbox.
